The winning team from Hull University photographed holding the shield. The team members are Johnathan Revell, Timothy Wright, Timothy Powell and Wesley Mason Every year the West Yorkshire Branch of the British Computer Society invites each University in the North East of England to send a team to take part in this fun event. The teams are comprised of up to four undergraduate students from any year and every participant receives a book token and the winning team is given a shield. The rules are the same as for the BBC University Challenge except that there is one starter question but only one follow-up question.

The Hull team looking at their memory sticks
This year was the twenty-first time that the event has been held and five teams registered for the event, which was held at Leeds Metropolitan University on 2nd March. Last year’s winners, Teesside, fielded two teams with other teams coming from Bradford, Hull and the hosts Leeds Met. The five teams played each other in the heats with points going to the winners of each round and the two highest scoring teams claiming a place in the final.

The final between Teesside and Hull was a very close game with each team having a very slight edge over their opponents at some stage during this nail biting round. Despite a very hard fought battle Hull eventually emerged the winners and returned home carrying this year’s Shield along with £20 in book tokens and a USB memory stick each. Teesside, the very worthy runners-up, each returned home with £20 book tokens and all the other contestants received £10 book tokens.

The Winning team captain and our Branch Chairman, Nick Seddon, posing with the shield Thanks go to LMU for hosting the event and Staff at all the competing Universities for their work in organising the event on what proved to be a difficult day for travel in West Yorkshire. We look forward to next year and another interesting, fun and exciting event.
